🧪 Why a Little Goes a Long Way
Start simple and slow. Use a carrier oil like fractionated coconut oil to dilute your essential oils for topical use. Roller bottles are perfect for daily applications. You can also use a spray mister bottle with water to create air fresheners or mist pillows at night.
We often hear, “I’ve got an oil for that!” And while that may be true, essential oils aren’t meant to be used excessively. They are highly concentrated. What you put on your body stays in your system for a long time.
To put that into perspective:
It takes about 1 pound (450 grams) of fresh peppermint leaves to produce just 10–15 drops of peppermint essential oil.
That means:
-
1 drop = ~25–30 large peppermint leaves
-
10 drops = 250–300 leaves
Peppermint essential oil is extracted through steam distillation, which pulls out volatile plant compounds like menthol. The oil yield is tiny—only about 0.1% to 0.5% by weight. That’s why it’s so potent—and why a little truly does go a long way.
☀️ Citrus oils like lemon, orange, and bergamot can be phototoxic—meaning they may increase sun sensitivity when applied to the skin. To stay safe, avoid direct sunlight on areas where citrus oils have been applied for at least 12 hours.
How to Begin Using Essential Oils
🧴 How to Begin Using Essential Oils Safely & Simply
Start slow and simple. You don’t need 20 oils to begin—just one or two well-chosen oils can make a big impact when used properly.
✅ Helpful Guidelines:
- Start with just one oil at a time, especially if you’re new to essential oils or using them for children.
- Always dilute in a carrier oil—like fractionated coconut oil—for safe topical use.
- Stay hydrated! Some people experience headaches from essential oil use when dehydrated.
- A good starting dilution is 20% essential oil to 80% carrier oil.
- For a 10 ml roller bottle, use 25–30 drops of essential oil, and fill the rest with carrier oil.
- Use less for children, the elderly, or those with sensitive skin.
- Always consult a medical professional when using essential oils on children, if you’re taking medications, or if you have any health concerns.
